The Bone Island Regatta is the race to Key West. It has start points in Sarasota and Naples. In May 2015 Moonshine started in Naples for the 97.5 NM race. We were awarded the 3rd place trophy for the cruising class along with a bottle of Pussers Rum. We later discovered that we, along with several other boats, passed the Smith Shoal Light to starboard instead of port which the rules require, so we disqualified ourselves. The crew had already drunk the rum 🙂 The crew consisted of Bruce Bingham and Don Davis.
This was the first year I had participated in the Key West race. Moonshine set a new personal best speed record of 8.2 kts. The wind was heavy for most of the race, blowing 20 to 25 all night.
